Khoomei Mongolian khoomei is a unique art that is created by the simultaneous production of different tones and melodies using both mono and stereo voices. There are many forms of khoomei. The four basic forms are: Kharkhiraa khoomei (bass), whistling khoomei (produces high melodies and tunes by whistling), chest khoomei (produces sound from the chest) and nasal khoomei (produces the above-mentioned sounds through the nose with the mouth shut). Khoomei that was originated from the ethnic groups dwelling in the Altai mountain range is a result of ongoing practice of imitation of the natural sounds such as echo, river, spring and water-falls, wind, leaves and wild animals. Khoomei is most common in the west of Mongolia and this style is also known among some other peoples of central Asia.
