A lot has changed in the three years since The Cheaters released their debut album, The Cheaters L.P. The southern-fried rockers have grown from bar-band status to full-blown arena shakers, opening for major-leaguers like ZZ Top, The Pretenders, Ace Frehley, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, REO Speedwagon, The Stray Cats, Molly Hatchett, and Shooter Jennings. This time spent on the road is evident in the much more mature sound of Midnight Run. Midnight Run is an ambitious rock ‘n roll record that captures the red-hot energy of The Cheaters’ legendary live shows. Frank Marchand returns to repeat his role as engineer and producer for the band’s sophomore effort. The band picks up where it left off, kicking out its hard-rocking “Whiskey Fueled, Home-Fried Rock ‘n Roll” sound. Midnight Run also contains a few surprises for listeners, as The Cheaters take a few more chances musically. Tracks like “I Ain’t Comin’ Back” see the band dipping into dirty blues territory, and “Bye Bye Baltimore Sky” is a soulful ballad that evokes thoughts of early Black Crowes. The band also steps up the musicality considerably on the new record, incorporating dueling lead guitars, key changes, guest musicians and back-up singers.
