简介
The story of the Selfish Giant has moved generations of children and adults alike. In this setting, Richard Jeffrey-Gray has managed to capture a musical style for both, just as Alison Dodd's libretto transparently interprets Wilde's words. The origins go back to 1995, a commission from Pied Piper and St George's, Bristol. That version is for piano, flute, violin and trombone. It was designed as a weekend workshop where every child could take part - constructing the set and painting trees which turn from spring to winter and back again, in dance for the winter scene. Plus if they could play one note or three on an instrument they were involved,, if they wanted to sing they could sing in one or more of the three songs. All of these with appropriate tutors, some of whom were not much older than the participants. Truly interactive and inspiring. By 1998 there was a commission for the more formal version for small orchestra, recorded here. Both versions are available for use. To finish the recording a while later, in 2016, Christopher Walker narrated the parts you would otherwise see on stage and provided a separate reading of the complete story. It is our hope that both versions speak for themselves.
