Like Remora is a concept single — a pair of pulsing, cinematic pieces that tell the true story of a near-drowning experience that artist Peter English had 3 years ago at the Jersey Shore. Attempting to cross a stretch of open water on his way to a sandbar, he got trapped in the surf. “It was foolishness, basically,” he recounts. “But I feel like that’s how most deaths must be, right? I was struggling in the water, exhausted and desperate, and I kept thinking to myself: Really?? This is it?” He survived, and within days was filtering the experience into music. “I didn’t realize I was writing about it at first. It was only when the lyrics started to appear that I realized it was how I was processing the experience.” The result is something he calls a concept single, an A/B side that tell a single story. The 2017 equivalent of a concept album.
