For better or worse, Notification Land inhabits a rawness that is a rarity in the clinical age of digital production. The concept revolves around the addictive reliance on social media and the abuse of technology. The lyrics have a dark cynical sneer, but not without being humorously twisted. What makes the album work is that it's not a political bashing on the fact we are always staring at our phones, it’s poking fun at that fact, but at the same time it’s serious and sincere. Because it was recorded on a Tascam four track cassette, it's easy to assume this album was written by an ironic hipster making a fashion statement; but if you actually take a look you'll realize it uses these lo-fi sonic qualities as part of the narrative aesthetic, and it does so in a big way. The tempos range from meditative to danceable, but the album as a whole has a consistent feel, which is one of its strongest attributes. There's a pseudo-folk thing going on with the song writing; many pieces are acoustic guitar-driven while others rely on heavy drums and electric guitar. The compositions hold up as individuals, and the craftsmanship sits at a surprisingly high standard with thematic sensibilities. Limitations aside, there are some great songs here with transcendent moments. In all its ironic glory and conscious hypocrisy, this is honest music. If you're looking for a hyper-clean sound with autotuned vocals, you won't find it here. What you will find is most likely worth much more than that.
