We do love our summers here in the upper Midwest and hate to waste even one day. But for many of us, if not most, fall is our favorite season. Cool nights and mornings are warmed by fireplaces and the smoke gives that autumn fragrance to the air along with the falling leaves. As a Baseball fan I look forward to the playoffs and the world series. Although it’s the end of the summer it feels like a new beginning, particularly for school age children and their parents. Kids say they don’t look forward to returning to school but reconnecting with classmates they haven’t seen for a couple of months and telling of our adventures over the summer was always fun. I remember how much we seemed to have changed during those few months. How much from those few years stays with us forever. The NFL, college football, high school football, etc. until the end of the first game, every team is undefeated, so much optimism in the fall. Fall is traditionally harvest time so families have fun taking trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches on weekends. It’s not unusual at all to see teenagers selling sweet corn from the bed of a pickup on the side of rural roads. I think living in a cool climate like ours, we like our clothes and we don’t mind putting on layers as much as folks in other parts of the country. Along the shores of Lake Superior and the Mississippi river the hard wood trees are crazy with color and day trips or weekend getaways are great fun. Lots of food and Bed and Breakfast inns, especially along the river.
