I just listened to a sneak preview of Troy Carver's soon-to-be-released new album. Actually, I have been listening to it in my car all week. This is a singer-songwriter album in the truest sense of that genre, one where the lyrics grip you and make you not ponder, but rather FEEL what Troy is feeling. His vocals are stronger than ever, and while his pop sensibilities keep it grounded and listenable, there are some unexpected melodies and rhythms that interest the ear... often in the spots where the lyrics need emphasis. That's mature songwriting. Using the time-tested contemporary christian music formula of mixing praise, worship, reflective and celebratory songs on the same album, it is well-positioned for successful CCM circulation. And, although his voice is unquestionably twang-less, you say to yourself, "He could write a great country album!" Most memorable are two songs written to his son and daughter that, while happy songs, have heartfelt sentiments that make your eyes... a little moist, especially if you have kids.
