简介

Texas duo Hyperbubble are known around the world for their art-punk approach to synthpop, disco, and sci-fi soundtracks, so when it came time for the band to do a covers album, Jess (vocals / Theremin / synths) and Jeff (vocals / sequencers / synths) naturally decided it should be all country songs. Now hold on there, partner! This is no joke. Jeff: "Back when I was a teenybopper, I found a copy of Gil Trythall's "Switched on Nashville" in a dollar bin at a used record store, took it home and listened to it six million times, so I reckon something like this was bound to happen. It took about a year to figure out how to get those sounds and put the songs together, then we played 'em live for a couple of years before making the album." For that extra bit of country flavor, WESTERN WARE was recorded in Nashville. To insure the Hyperbubble sound, all traditional country instruments were banned from the studio, as the back of the album cover guarantees, "100% Electronic. No Strings Attached". The twang and wail of traditional country instruments have all been meticulously replicated by pitch bends and filter sweeps, so what you hear may sound like a harmonica, or a slide guitar, or a horse, even, but it's all Moog and Theremin. In addition to containing enough electronic squiggles to make you happier than a tornado in a trailer park, WESTERN WARE features guest appearances by Scott Simon of synthpunk pioneers Our Daughter's Wedding, Aleah Metzger Hendricks of Kentucky country rockers Starling's Curve plus Rikki and Daz, who teamed up with Glen Campbell for a 2002 Top 20 version of "Rhinestone Cowboy". If The Beach Boys are the sound of California in the 60's, and Kraftwerk the sound of Europe in the 70's-80's, then Hyperbubble's new album, WESTERN WARE is the sound of Texas in the year 2017: A wild wild West of urban cowboys, roller derby girls, honky-tonk angels, and of course, Darth Vader. The CD version is beautifully packaged in a jewel case with full color printing on the disc and 4-panel foldout cover. The album sounds as great on a pair of modern headphones as it does blasting from an old Chevy pickup truck. Even Gil Trythall himself gave it his Texas-sized approval! So rustle yourself up your very own copy of WESTERN WARE for your next bionic barn dance, and hear Hyperbubble put the "Moo" in "Moog".
