For 'cello & piano, completed in October 1993, dedicated to the memory of the American writer Ayn Rand. The musicx is an elegy written in 12-note technique and displays the lyrical quzlity of the 'cello with the piano in an accompanying role. Ayn Rand was one of America's best known writers and her book THE FOUNTAINHEAD was made into a Hollywood movie. Performance: Gary Williams, ;cello; Betty Beath, piano. ERIC GROSS (b.1926) Track 16. MICHAEL'S MEANDERINGS (1996). Composed for and dedicated to the 'cellist MICHAEL HOOPER, this brief work exploits some of the 20th century techniques and effects which can be produced on the two instruments involved. The virtuosic Mandola part was written especially for ADRIAN HOOPER. Both artists are heard in this recording. Track 17. SYDNEY HARBOUR BLUES (1989). A very simple jazz-style piano piece written for Australian pianist Sally Mays. It is meant to appeal to children of all ages. Performance: Ray Lemond, piano. COLIN BRUMBY (b.1933) Track 14. SLOW MOVEMENT - FLUTE CONCERTO (1975) A perfect example of the composer's gift for melody and effective orchestration together with virtuosic writing for the flute.
