Even though I’m one of these precious, singer/songwriter drips, one of my deep loves is instrumental music. Truth be told, I actually prefer it to music with lyrics. Mostly because I find lyrics so distracting when I’m trying to do something else. If someone’s talking to me and telling me something, I’m keen to try and listen. I feel I owe it to the writer to at least pay attention. But happily, that responsibility is out the window with instrumentals. You can just enjoy the music. Let it wash over you. I’ve written a LOT of instrumental music. Probably about 25 percent of the stuff I write is instrumental. But no one’s ever heard it. Why? Because I know that for a lot of people, instrumental music is either not their thing, it’s boring to them, or it’s some kind of horrible torture. Whatever...cool. Everything is not for everybody. That’s what makes the world go around. So I don’t include those kinds of compositions on my “official” JVA cd releases. I’d hate to bug anyone. Still I’ve always toyed with the idea of someday bringing out a disc where I’m not singing. But who’d be interested? Who would really care? Well, let’s find out.
