And now what, should I quit playing? This is what Adele Nigro, now 21 years old, puzzled over an year ago, trying to deal with a past that just went off with her old band (The Lovecats) and with a future still to be written. But, as it happens in happy endings, Adele doesn’t quit and raises the stake, booking some gigs on her own, with her acoustic guitar and new songs she had in her mind. This is how Any Other is born: it’s getting back into the game, it’s working on the songs that we will find in the upcoming album “Silently. Quietly. Going Away”. Ten songs that tell us who Adele is, what happens to her, what she does and doesn’t like, what she listens to and what she can do with a guitar in her hands. The opening “Something” becomes the ideal bridge between what once was and what is now, to enter in a world made of guitars and and poetry, with an indie rock attitude that brings us to the 90’s of Modest Mouse and Built to Spill, but also to contemporary songwriters like Waxahatchee. A 40 minutes length album with Adele’s voice painting differently coloured stories, that tell us about difficult separations (“Gladly Farewell”), or imaginative landscapes due to studying Coleridge’s poetry (“Blue Moon”). Adele is talented, sensitive, and she has an incredible determination for just being turned twenty-one: these are very precious gifts, that make her see the world as it really is, and also handle it. Songs like “His Era” or “365 days”, even if a little melancholy, never lose their openness; we can say the same when she has a talk with her own common-sense (“Roger Roger, Commander”), in the most delicate moments too (“I will try to keep the guilt separated from my temptation of blaming it all on me” from “5.47 p.m.”). But now Adele isn’t alone anymore: song after song, arrangement after arrangement, Erica Lonardi (now nineteen-year-old), on drums, and Marco Giudici, on bass (but also on synth on “Teenage”), became essential parts of Any Other, now able to make the most of dynamics and themes, also of the only love song of the album, “Sonnet #4”. The final track is “To The Kino, Again”, supported by an excited arrangement of bass and drums that suddenly slows down, calms down, and finally raises on the mantra that gives the name to this debut album. Two intense days to record everything in Ravenna and a little more time to mix the album in Milan, and then Andrea Suriani’s mastering: the outcome is here and has something incredible, if we think about how young Any Other are and the great autonomy they made the LP through – and this proves that keeping playing has been the best choice. The brand new label Bello Records is releasing “Silently. Quietly. Going Away” on sep. 18th. And now, we just have to wait with confidence; until then, Adele will keep putting together the pieces of the puzzle that one year ago looked like an operation of titanic proportions, a puzzle that, thanks to Erica and Marco, now composes a beautiful picture.
