Kaylan Mackinnon is a singer-songwriter & actor born in Toronto, Ontario. Her style of music is a mix between Pop/Alternative, but she also loves to play a mean acoustic set. Kaylan has a long line of Canadian history, but given her name Kaylan (Irish) and Mackinnon (Scottish), she embraces not only her own personalized style of music but also the rare true redhead-freckled look. Not being from the city and growing up in the country taught Kaylan to be self-entertained, and that's where music eventually came along. At the age of 14 she began training in classical voice and took a few guitar lessons. Wanting to further her musical abilities, Kaylan began teaching herself how to song write at the age of fifteen while on a family trip to Barbados. Through her teen years she became more influenced as a songwriter by artists such as Ryan Tedder, Avril Lavigne, The Veronicas, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. In 2010, Kaylan started her own YouTube channel and began posting covers and original videos. Within a year, she had reached over 300,000 views and over 30,000 subscribers. In 2012, Kaylan was nominated for the Best Young Songwriter in the Toronto International Music Awards, where one of the judging who nominated her was none other than Juno Award Winner, Jully Black. Kaylan has been working with former NEVEREST band member, Mike Klose, now a Toronto-based producer. Together, they released Kaylan's first single titled 'Down To You' in the summer of 2013. Recently, Kaylan placed in the Top 10 finalists for the Hard Rock Rising Contest, where she had the opportunity to play at the Hard Rock Cafe in Toronto in March 2014. In May 2014, Kaylan was showcased at this years Canadian Music Week, among headliner acts that include Ellie Goulding, City and Colour, M.I.A and much more. At the moment, Kaylan has been writing new material and performing consistently. She is currently majoring in the Creative Writing department at University of British Columbia while pursing her own career in music. “Explaining to someone why you want to pursue music is like asking someone why they choose to breathe." says Kaylan. "It’s not something that can just be expressed in words. For me, music is something I need and it would be the cherry on top if I could be successful with it. Writing songs, singing my own material and having the ability to share that with people is a feeling that is indescribable! Especially when you’re able to truly affect someone with your music. That’s the best part and I hope I’m able to do that for the rest of my life.”
