The Experiment: 7 Dawns 7 Songs I decided to experiment with writing at Dawn, immediately after awakening from sleep. When, presumably my mind would be uncluttered and free from judgments and distractions. At the time I was eagerly reading many books on new thought, the subconscious mind and discovering many unity principles. The Process: Each night before going to sleep I would set up simple recording station, tune my guitar, and leave them ready next to my bed. I decided to use some altered tunings because a. they interest me b. I felt it would liberate me from leaning on my comfort zone of chords and harmonic knowledge as it applied to the guitars standard tuning. When I awoke each morning I immediately picked up the guitar and pressed record. I would spontaneously compose for 15-20 minutes. Each day produced a new theme and a new set of lyrics. ( yes one day produced a 2nd song : ) Later in the afternoon I listened back to that mornings session and tidied up the heads and tails, a little arranging perhaps then I condensed the 15-20 minute theme into a song. The Result: I was more than pleased with the results. I found the altered tunings pushed me into fresh ideas on the guitar and the quiet, uncluttered mornings brought up some interesting lyrics. A few of these songs did end up getting properly recorded on subsequent projects, but listening back to these tapes I found the raw originals to be very much alive and well, and to offer some special energy not captured in the later versions. Seven Dawns ~ Seven Songs is comprised of the original songs warts and all, just as I recorded them at my bedside. The Equipment : All these were recorded live onto a Sony mini disc player. I used a single external stereo microphone and an Alvarez acoustic guitar.
