She drank too much, so accepted a ride home from an acquaintance, a fellow student. On the ride home, she passed out. The next day, the girl woke up at home in pain. She didn’t remember what happened the night before. Within hours, though, a video showing her rape was sent to her phone and later spread on social media. As she and her mom grappled with the aftermath, two other female students spoke up, saying they too had been raped by the same boy. When these girls tried to return to school, they were met at the doors by peers who jeered at and bullied them in a classic example of victim blaming. School administrators told the girls to stay home until the furor died down. Friends and students worked together with adults to organize a local grassroots effort to confront this injustice. We called the group YES All Daughters. As founding student members, we helped organize a protest against the peer bullying and administrative apathy the victims endured. On November 24, 2014, we joined with students at Norman High School who staged a school walkout. Our protest drew national attention, led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of the rapist, and resulted in legislation that included sexual assault prevention and response education in all Oklahoma schools. Written the evening after the protest, “Hey Honey Hey” was inspired by these events. ___________ Annie Oakley is an indie-folk band founded by Oklahoma singer-songwriters and twin sisters Sophia and Grace Babb. Featuring violinist Nia Personette, the group’s original music and compelling harmonies have a soulful sound that comes straight from the heart.
