简介
It Was 20 Years Ago Today.... Was originally released as a self-titled cassette. From 1985 - 1990, Judith Zweiman, Duane Michael Tucker, Mark McColl and Tom Duvall (along with a cast of other great musicians) performed Sunday nights at Augie's, on Broadway and 106th Street in Manhattan, a well known Columbia University hangout. The band found themselves with a wacky group of loyal and devoted fans, where the cops would often show up at 3 A.M. to break up a bit too spirited sing-along rendition of "American Pie." (Today, Augie’s is known as Smoke, immortalized in the TV series "The Sopranos."). They also played regularly at the Speakeasy and the Sun Mountain Cafe in Greenwich Village, and in countless bars and restaurants around the New York metropolitan area. Performing a mix of originals and cover tunes in the bars and pure originals in the more formal venues, they wound up opening for Tom Paxton, Buffy St. Marie, The Fabulous Rhinestones, Kingfish (with Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead), Tom Chapin, Glen Burtnick of Styx, and their dream gig of opening for country music supergroup Restless Heart was unhappily cancelled at the last minute. There were many other “brushes with greatness,” with Judith’s song “Heart On Ice” being covered by Shawn Colvin and Lucy Kaplansky at the Fast Folk Revue at The Bottom Line in NYC in 1987. Their cover of Steve Key’s song “Record Time” was heard and cut by Kathy Mattea on her “Lonesome Standard Time” album. Many of Judith’s songs were recorded and released on the Fast Folk Musical Magazine label, which helped launch the careers of Suzanne Vega, Lyle Lovett, Michelle Shocked and Christine Lavin, to name a few. They were a perennial at the New York Folk Festival in Greenwich Village. One of their crowning achievements was to be inducted into the Smithsonian Folkways collection, thanks to Fast Folk’s long-time manager and creative director (in addition to being a great songwriter himself), Richard Meyer. So, they've been goin' out and comin’ back in style, but Judith Zweiman and Duane Michael Tucker have continued to play their unique blend of folk, contemporary country, rock and jazz for over two decades.
