First, there is this description as to the origins of the music: "This basic sound material was recorded in my biological mother's uterus with my not yet developed teeth used as a fundamental and simple recording device a few days before my birth." Listeners are also given these instructions: "Load this CD in your CD player, confirm that sound is coming out through the speakers, and then just leave the room. When you come back everything will be totally changed." So, what is Extraction, you might want to ask? A single 57-minute piece, it consists of electrical hums and helicopter propellers -- or a beating heart and its circulatory system heard through the haze of amniotic fluid, all broken down into electrical stimuli. Interpretations are numerous, but in the end the piece remains pretty static (except for a general movement of growth in thickness and a coda consisting of a motherly voice), is electronic-based, and fills your listening room with a strange shroud of noise that has more to do with the between-stations sounds of a shortwave radio than life in utero. Extraction is music to throw questions at. Just don't expect it to answer back.
