简介

Composer, conductor and singer Stephen Sturk (born: October 2, 1950 in Chicago) has musical affiliations on both coasts. He is composer-in-residence at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego, co-founder and artistic director of Cappella Gloriana, San Diego’s professional chamber choir, and a founding director of San Diego’s Pacific Academy of Ecclesiastical Music (PACEM). He served on the faculty of the University of San Diego where he was director of the Choral Scholars Program. With Cappella Gloriana Dr. Sturk has toured twice in Germany, made four recordings and conducted every performance since 1996. His compositions have played an important part in the musical life of San Diego’s Episcopal diocese for the last 20 years, and he has been a music director at six San Diego-area churches. Sturk has more than 20 sacred anthems in print from publishers Arista Music, C.F. Peters, Associated Music and Oregon Catholic Press. His compositions include anthems, masses, canticles and service music commissioned by churches all over the United States. Before he moved to California in 1991, he was a conductor, composer and tenor in New York City where his principal positions included music director of The New York Motet Choir, associate conductor of the choirs at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and director of The Juilliard Singers at The Juilliard School of Music (under the auspices of the Lincoln Center Student Program). As a professional singer Sturk has performed and recorded with the Waverly Consort, New York Philharmonic, Musica Sacra, New York's Ensemble for Early Music, and Steve Reich and Musicians. He appears as conductor or singer on more than 60 recordings, most notably on the soundtrack of the Disney animated feature "Beauty and the Beast." Dr. Sturk was educated at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois (B.A. in Classics) which recognized his career as a composer by awarding him the college’s prestigious Fine Arts Medal in October 2008. He received the M.A. in music history and literature from San Diego State University, where his specialty was music of the California Missions. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from North Dakota State University. Cappella Gloriana, San Diego’s professional chamber choir since 1996, performs and records the world’s finest choral music, mentors younger singers in the choral arts and advances the work of California composers. From a base in San Diego, the ensemble presents an annual concert season that reaches audiences throughout southern California. The choir’s 8-16 singers gained critical acclaim on their two tours in Germany, have performed in Mexico, in Los Angeles at the World Festival of Sacred Music – LA, in Palm Springs, in Orange and Riverside counties and throughout San Diego city and county. The choir performs a variety of secular and sacred music, including the compositions of its co-founder Dr. Stephen Sturk. Cappella Gloriana has recorded four commercial CDs including a critically lauded Christmas album “O Holy Night.” The ensemble has commissioned a number of new works and it has performed several American or world premieres. Cappella Gloriana has received grants from a wide variety of government, corporate and private sources.
