The soundtrack to the documentary film “The Shadows of Virtue” is a purposeful blend of American acoustic heartland rock and African choral and a cappella vocal music, recorded in Tanzania during the summer of 2006. The disc opens with Miller’s signature laid-back acoustic hooks on the very singable “News for You” and runs seamlessly into the tight, powerful vocals of the Msasani Church choir. The arrangements, from the stripped down, dirty guitar on “I Will Be There” to the hauntingly poignant incarnation of “American the Beautiful,” create a welcome, relaxed counterpoint to not only the traditional sounds of Swahili voices, but also the serious nature of the film. The whole disc may be worth your time if only for the natural, cinderblock reverb and background crickets on the men’s choir recording of “God My God.”
