简介

In her 23 Sophie Villy - remarkebly promising singer/songwriter is well known for her unique performing style. Minimalistic arrangments, vintage guitar's distinctive twang and soulful timbre of voice open up another deep world, full of grace and intelligence, nurtured in the bohemian quarters of Georgian culture. In 2008 she was hiding from warfare in her homeland, but has since moved to her motherland Kiev, Ukraine. Artists were common visitors to Sophie's childhood home in Tbilisi, they undoubtedly left their mark. We hear, as a result, both the voices of modern neighbors and the echoes of twelfth-century poet Shota Rustaveli. Grounded in that multifaceted heritage, Sophie's debut album "Mother Fish" now takes a wide range of private stories to the outside world. The singer and her catalog are one and the same: wholly sincere and full of incisive observations.. You can feel a kind of 'eastern' power, even spirituality, within her work. At times it seems to adopt the illusionary forms of mirage. Sophie has been singing since she was three. Her music is “inspired” by her designer mother, Mila, and influenced by her musician father, David, who used to gather an intimate circle of friends for regular sessions in his “Music Lair” – a room smelling of “autumn, wine and cigars” - at their home in Tbilisi, Georgia. She started writing songs at the age of 14 and at 16, while studying tourism at high school, Sophie began performing in clubs of her hometown with her good friend and talented guitarist Irakli Metreveli, doing covers and original work. After moving to Kiev and forming a short-lived band, “Backstage”, Sophie soon began performing solo and collaborating with a diverse array of fellow musicians. She was heard at many international music and film festivals. Sophie was born on October 30, 1990, in Tbilisi and lived across the road from the Tbilisi State Conservatory, where every morning she was waking up with the heavenly sounds from its windows. At five she started taking piano lessons and four years later she switched to the guitar and started playing herself, without a teacher. Her musical tastes have been formed by an eclectic international mix of musicians - The Beatles, Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley, Ray Charles, Nick Drake, The Rolling Stones, Russian rock band Aquarium led by the iconic Boris Grebenshikov (who she once met), Radiohead, Cure, The Eels, Portishead and Morcheeba among them. One of Sophie’s most acclaimed songs from the debut album "Mother Fish"- “What You Give”, written in 2010 opens up the main phrase of a Georgian poet of the twelveth-century Shota Rustaveli. From five until fifteen, she traveled Europe as a successful diver, winning Euromeeting 2002 in Strasbourg and many other international competitions in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Greece, Hungary and France. “Traveling at that age was amazing opportunity to open up something new and my mind too. I always love changing pictures around.” Unfortunately, she had to quit diving because of knee injury. Her debut album “Mother Fish” is inspired by her childhood dream. As a little girl she dreamed of a blue fish. She always wanted to catch it. “I think, a Fish is a very pure and blameless creature. I don’t know why, but I can identify it only to my best friend, my mother.” The album was recorded in October 2011, in Tbilisi, and released on February 22, 2012 as a present for her mother’s birthday. On this album worked Sandro Nikoladze (drums), Levan Mikaberidze (bass), Giorgi Berishvili (keyboars, Hammond, Saxophone) and David Toidze (Mix and Mastering). (Terry Friel) "Her voice is transcending; it sounds worldly. She has a unique, yet common spirit." Richard Galliano
