Halo Friendlies专辑介绍:by Stewart MasonIt had to happen eventually. As the mid-'90s explosion of post-riot grrrl cutesy/punky all-female bands was winding to a close, along came the Halo Friendlies. As one might guess from their name, Bikini Kill they ain't. Like a lot of Christian rock bands of their era, this Long Beach, CA, quartet doesn't make too big a deal of their beliefs. Most of their lyrics deal with Christian themes in a non-preachy way, and a good chunk of this album actually covers more secular topics, like the umpteenth love letter to Hong Kong film star Jackie Chan and the bizarre kiss-off "Flake-O (On My Scalp-O)." But while the group have more interesting lyrical themes than some, they're unfortunately pretty undistinguished as songwriters. The playfully sloppy musicianship works fine, but the songs are neither particularly tuneful nor interestingly noisy. The Halo Friendlies get points for infiltrating a genre one would think is mostly impervious to religious messages, but they'll have to work a little harder to make music interesting enough to put that message across.
