"Funk Me Up" was completed as a senior project by two music industry students at Drexel University; Jake Kampman and Jody Salani were assigned to work with Avenue Eight and act as producers on the EP. Within 10 weeks, they recorded demos, tracked the instruments and vocals, mixed, and mastered the tracks.

The EP was written primarily by Franco Giacomarra, Matt Coakley, and Stefano Giacomarra throughout 2016 and especially over winter break. Through each song, they wanted to tell a similar story, but with different musical styles. They had a lot of influence at the time from Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and many other classic funk/soul artists. However, they were also infatuated with the newer funk pop songs on the radio such as "Uptown Funk" and "Cake By The Ocean," so these certainly had influence as well.
