Jay Graydon: First of all, please note, it seems iTunes and maybe other digital services as well, have listed 2 different bands with the same name - JaR - (with different spellings) in their database and blended all songs for downloading, as being released by one and the same band. So please make sure you are actually downloading the correct titles! Our song titles are all correctly noted here on CD Baby. Back to the song: Randy and I have been writing songs together for many years. We wrote and demoed the song - SOMETIMES YOU WIN - during the era of the Alesis ADAT's. When I record demos, most of the time I record the songs as masters, which is what happened in this case. At the time, we wrote and recorded as to pitch songs for other recording artists. When mixing the song, I was reminded of the midi instruments we used at the time and dug the fact the sounds are good! We recorded in our typical style, which is Randy plays the drum and percussion parts, the main keyboard part, and the bass part. I played the string parts. I can't remember if Randy sang the vocals in my studio or sang in his studio sending me the ADAT tape. *Ran, do you remember how that went down? Randy Goodrum: As for the recording of Sometimes You Win here’s my assumption. I see in my files that I imported the audio from you in ’06 and did the vocals in Logic, then exported them back to you. Jay: Great info! Yea, I had to have sent you the audio files. They were surely ADAT files I transferred to Pro Tools as I transferred every song to PT that were recorded on ADAT when I first bought PT. Really glad I did that! Yea man! We were using some kind of Mac iCloud program for the transfers. Yea, you had resung the song and probably the same for the background vocals. Great job as usual as to the vocals! Randy: The original track was, indeed, done entirely using ADATs. Jay: Yea, for sure! If you remember, the ADAT format was 48k and I think 16 bit? Randy: Maybe we still were using the LINN 9000 for the midi, or something like that? Who knows?>> Jay: Right, who knows. It could have been Performer for the sequencer but not sure. Randy: I don’t have any sequences in Logic regarding the making of the track and I recognize all the sounds as being from your studio setup; keys, bass, drums, etc. I hope that helps. Jay: I was thinking the same last night. We may have used the EMU 3 sampler for the drums. I bet we used the AKAI 900 for the percussion. Probably the Mini Moog for the bass and no doubt we used the Yamaha TX 8 rack for the DX7 Rhodes sounds. I think we used a Roland rack synth for the violins. I think we used the Oberheim Xpanders for the string pads. Probably a Roland rack synth for the bells. Randy: In fact, I may have edited or brought up to date the lyrics for the final version; not sure. Remember, it was just a demo and who remembers details from demo sessions? Jay: Man, so true.
