Not much is known about the seemingly elusive Jamin Hernandez - except that he's quite obviously a producer of some repute and a man for whom a stellar (and lengthy) career in electronic music seems set in stone. As likely to turn his hand to disco as he is to deep house, his is an eclectic talent that's most worth keeping an eye on. Both his diversity and his stark production talents shine brightly out of his debut for the aptly fledgling Mexican imprint, Tenampa Recordings, itself a label that's already played host to remix and originals by the likes of Hector, David Durango, Amine Edge, Patrice Baumel, Nikola Gala, Pezzner, Martin Eyerer and a whole host of veritable others. Matters kick off with the inspired sounds of 'Release Me'. Injected with a firm underground aesthetic, its subtle synth whooshes, intricate claps and wonderfully spliced latin vocal lead the listener down a most sophisticated deep house lane that's laden with dexterous moments and cunning soundscapes alike. Title-track 'I Am Real' bursts into life with a steely, almost industrial alarm sample its main emphasis; a pattern that's soon broken thanks to a stunning and unpredictable melding of genres. Disco timbres replace the former, but it's the bulbous, party-starting bassline that's the real winner, as it brings an added sense of unlikely momentum to a track that's already brimming with personality. Prolific Spanish producer German Brigante (Saved, Area Remote, Trapez) then turns in a remix that quite literally bubbles, with a male vocal added and the aforementioned bassline maintained for ultimate effect. Final track 'Running from Love' is characterised by its clattering percussion and soulful, almost Barry White-esque vocals. Much like the title number, it takes a while to really explode, but when it does, it too serves up another treat that's worth waiting for.
