Folk, blues and gospel come from the people. Some of these songs are hundreds of years old and some more recent, but all are in the public domain now; they belong to you and me. Folk is how a people preserve their history in song, and these songs carry that history all over the world. Blues and gospel, a legacy from the lamentable days of the slave trade, are infectious--it's impossible not to join in. Singing the blues makes me feel good. And gospel--well, those southern Baptists knew how to throw a great church service!
