Kantana’s Biography “We become what we think about.” Before he became known to the world as Kantana, young Eric Williams was just another youth with the dream of becoming one of dancehall’s finest. Born to parents Annette Gray and Eric Williams, Kantana hails from the beautiful parish of Portland, but later moved to Kingston, where he attended the Calabar High School. Currently, Kantana lives in Jacks Hill where he is fully focused on building his empire, the Young Star Family. There, he stands as a mentor for many youths by providing them with a musical platform and encourages them, as he was encouraged and guided by his godfathers in the business, Biggimani (Big A) and Bankeylous. Kantana is from a resolutely un-musical family; everything he says, comes from his passion and his desire to be successful in the business. He describes himself as an optimistic individual who is always up for the challenge. He is a prolific lyricist and songwriter, driven only by this desire, a desire that has been with him from as long as he’s known himself. Music to Kantana is a form of art and a means of connecting with the people. His music is not only about his experiences, but the experiences of others through his eyes, that’s why he describes his music as reality music but, even though his music is realistic it is motivating, inspirational and optimistic. The artiste started his illustrious career in music when he was introduced to his role model and now friend Beenie Man by Beenie Man’s brother, Rohan Smith aka Blue. Kantana made his big debut back in the 2002 with the song “Hungry Days” produced under Beenie Man’s 357 Records but it wasn’t until 2010 that Kantana decided to do music professionally. Since then he has been an opening act for Beenie Man and a song writer for many popular artistes in the business. Beenie man has played an integral role in the development of his career and under his tutelage, has steered his career towards his early goal of becoming one of the finest in the business. The artiste has recorded a myriad of singles over the years but, carefully chooses what to release to his growing fan base. His intention is not only to have a lot of songs out there, but instead, he is focused on building a catalogue. His biggest performances include, Sting 2013, Sumfest 2014, Jazz and Blues 2014 and Rain Forest Seafood Festival 2015. Kantana has had the opportunity of performing at many huge festivals in other places across the world such as France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Finland in Europe and African countries such as Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. Kantana has also performed in most Caribbean Countries, North America, and many countries in South America. Kantana is presently promoting his five tracks CD, which is a part of his blue print. The compilation boasts some of his best works, with songs such as “Smoke & Drink & Then,” “Mi Waah Si Di Girls Dem,” “Head a Bunx,” “Hustle Fi Wah Mi Want” ft. Beenie Man, and “Still a Try, Still a Work.” Kantana has proved to be one of dancehall’s most persistent artistes with his lyrical and vocal talent, coupled with a natural knack for music.
