Written and first recorded by McKinney in 2000, “A Call to Courage” is a ballad with mesmerizing lyrics that salute law enforcement officers across America, as well as the brave men and women who risked their lives on September 11, 2001 to save lives at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, following deadly attacks by terrorists. Also, United Airlines Flight 93, heading to D.C., crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers intervened with hijackers; all onboard were killed. The three tragedies totaled more than 3,100 people killed; another 6,000-plus injured. McKinney first gained national recognition in 2001, when as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff (metro Detroit), he was invited to perform “A Call to Courage” in front of 18,000 people at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Candlelight ceremony in Washington D.C. With U.S. Senator Trent Lott and Attorney General John Ashcroft in attendance, McKinney (saxophone) and Nichelle Colvin (vocals) delivered a riveting performance to commemorate the lives of the nation’s fallen law officers. For decades, international gospel recording artist and evangelist Clark-Cole has performed as a solo artist, and as a member of the legendary gospel recording group, “The Clark Sisters.” Yet, she considers the opportunity to record “A Call to Courage” as a significant endeavor for the nation to never forget the tragedies of 911. “I’m honored to be a part of ‘A Call to Courage,’ which honors the heroes of 911, many of whom, lost their lives helping to save others,” said Clark-Cole during a studio break while recording the song. “I pray that we, as a nation, have the courage to answer the many calls that we are now facing. My prayer is that everyone that listens to ‘A Call to Courage’ is inspired to make a difference.” McKinney added. “I’m ecstatic to have the world-class gospel star Dorinda Clark-Cole record with me on ‘A Call to Courage,’ ” said McKinney, who has performed and/or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Ayers, Cuba Gooding, Sr., Regina Belle and others. “I pray that the song will not only honor the brave men and women who risked – some losing - their lives on September 11, 2001, but will issue a new clarion call to courage for our current armed forces, law enforcement officers, and community leaders.”
