Beth Kinderman's 2008 debut album, “All Of My Heroes Are Villains” (also available on CD Baby!), featured witty, geeky folk songs about topics including Star Wars, unrequited love, roleplaying games, Firefly, spirituality, and having serial killers for role models. It won her a devoted fanbase of nerdy music lovers and a regular spot at sci-fi conventions across the Midwest. Her second album, “Apocalypse Blues,” expands upon her first release with a richer, more evolved, and more rock-oriented sound. The skillful, inventive backing of the Player Characters (drummer and accordionist Justin Hartley, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Stagner, and vocalist/keyboardist/percussionist Nikki Walker) and numerous guest musicians (including fiddler Andy Anda and members of Feng Shui Ninjas and Candles Enough) makes this release into a hard-rocking, multi-layered mix of folky songwriting, progressive rock production, and punk energy. Lyrically, you'll hear dramatic rock anthems about “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Fullmetal Alchemist” that you don't have to be a geek to appreciate, post-apocalyptic folk hoedowns, and the album's centerpiece “Apocalypse Blues” trilogy about three female characters from the re-imagined “Battlestar Galactica.” This is an ambitious, complex record that challenges assumptions of what music for geeks can be.
