简介

Paul Buskirk专辑介绍:by Stewart MasonProduced by Paul Buskirk's longtime friend Willie Nelson (Buskirk was the star of Nelson's Stardust album in the early '80s) and released on Nelson's own label, Nacogdoches Waltz is a fine collection of jazz standards (plus a playful take on Bach's "Jesu (Joy of Man's Desiring)"). Although Buskirk gained his name playing in the hot Western swing style of Bob Wills and others, this is a more traditionally jazzy recording. The tempos are largely sedate (only the brief "Little Rock Getaway" picks up the pace, and even it's just a fast shuffle), and while Buskirk's playing -- largely on the mandola, the beefier cousin to his primary instrument the mandolin -- is typically excellent throughout, there's a sense of restraint to this too-brief album that makes it slightly disappointing. Not every jazz album has to be a cutting contest, of course, but a bit more swing on songs like "Sophisticated Lady" is always welcome. As a result, Nacogdoches Waltz is pleasant, but disappointingly slight.
