简介
I started singing on stage after watching several talented people sing at my school talent show. The way they each had their own unique tone and could captivate an audience made me say to myself, "I wanna do that". So, at my middle school showcase in sixth grade, I sang "Fireflies" by Owl City. I hate how cliche this sounds but after that moment, when people gave me a standing ovation--despite my squeaky/pubescent voice and stiff posture--because they were so surprised that a shy kid like me would perform a song, everything changed. Cue the 4 year montage of mistakes, narcissism, frustration and lots of work; I'm a confident 17 year old alternative singer/songwriter with a professionally recorded single, a humbler, more serious attitude toward my abilities and more music on my iPod than my phone can store. In my opinion, the meaning of a song is never set in stone by an artist or a listener, so I know that this song will mean different things for different people--maybe nothing at all for some. But for me, "Suburban Forest" is simply a ballad of admiration for the sheltered beauty of middle-class, suburban life. My life. A lot of the songs I write criticize my generation's privilege and ignorance in today's society but this song admits, almost reluctantly, how even though this beauty is so easily shattered, it is still alluring and serene. During the prolonged span of this song's production, so many things were going through my mind; "What if no one likes it? What if everyone loves it and I can't handle the attention? Is any of this worth it? Should I stop?". I realized once I finished the production of the song--with my friend and producer Matt Noble at Riverworks Studios, thanks Matt!!-- and listened to the song completely, that no matter what the outcome, I'm proud of what I accomplished and that music is always something that will be an integral part of me, even if no one else sees or hears it. And so, I implore you to, "Take a walk with me, through this suburban forest".
