Una manera de vivir (ENGLISH) A family bonded by love and music: RIENDAS LIBRES (Free Reins) is a trio. It is a musical project in which each member is indispensable and interconnected. Martina Ulrich keeps the beat by playing her bombo, a traditional Argentinean percussion instrument, combining it with her drum set, merging it all together while marking her own unique style. Homero Carabajal contributes his creativity and talent, but also the intensity of his youth, which signals a new path. Peteco Carabajal is a pioneer of the new folklore tradition. He has written some of the most often interpreted and well-loved songs of the Argentinean songbook. He brings forth experience and wisdom to the project. Together they blend magic and love, music and family. For them, it’s a way of living. PETECO CARABAJAL Cantor, guitarrista, violinista y compositor. “Como pájaros en el aire”, “Perfume de carnaval”, “La estrella azul”, “Digo la mazamorra”, “Puente Carretero”, “Mi abuela bailó la zamba”, por citar sólo algunas, son obras que han recorrido el mundo y que ya forman parte del acervo cultural del pueblo argentino. Nacido un 25 de mayo en La Banda, Santiago del Estero, Peteco Carabajal fue criado en su casa familiar del barrio de Los Lagos donde la música era parte de la vida cotidiana, especialmente en las guitarreadas de domingo en el patio de tierra, con su padre Carlos y su tío Agustín. En 1974 debuta profesionalmente con “Santiago Trío” (junto a su primo Roberto Carabajal y Shalo Leguizamón) grabando su primer material discográfico. Al año siguiente Peteco ya se incorpora al histórico grupo familiar “Los Carabajal”. En la década del 80, es convocado por el Chango Farías Gómez para formar M.P.A. (Músicos Populares Argentinos) con el Mono Izarrualde y Verónica Condomí. Peteco lleva también a su amigo Jacinto Piedra, quien más tarde lo acompaña junto al bailarín Juan Saavedra en el grupo “Santiagueños”, marcando un antes y un después en el folklore local. Mercedes Sosa, quien grabó muchas de sus canciones, lo invita a grabar en dos trabajos discográficos y a acompañarla en giras por Alemania, Austria, Bélgica, Holanda, Suiza y EEUU durante tres años. En 1991 edita el disco “Encuentro” dando comienzo a su carrera solista que, hasta el día de hoy le ha dado 12 discos más, además de numerosos premios y reconocimientos: Gran Premio SADAIC en 1989, Consagración Cosquín en 1990 con “Santiagueños”, Premio ACE en 1992 y en 1994, Konex de Platino en 1995, Premio Gardel a la Música en 2004 por su disco “El baile”, Premio Atahualpa al Folklore y nombramiento como Personalidad Destacada de la Cultura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, en 2011, Mención de Honor D. F. Sarmiento otorgada por el Senado de la Nación, y Premio Gardel a la Música, por su disco “El Viajero”, en 2012. En 2014 obtuvo la Mención “Hombres y Mujeres de Nuestra Tierra” otorgada por la H.C. de Diputados de la Nación, y recientemente, en el mismo recinto, recibió el Premio Democracia en el rubro Música por el Centro Cultural Caras y Caretas. En los últimos años, ha incursionado en la pintura, produjo una película en la que refleja la cultura de Santiago del Estero desde su personal y autorizada visión: “Chacarera”. También editó un disco de tango: “Peteco de Buenos Aires”, bajo el sello Pelo Music, grabado en vivo en 2013, en el Tasso durante el ciclo del mismo nombre. Y actualmente está escribiendo un libro sobre la historia de su familia. También con Pelo Music lanzó su último trabajo de estudio: “Los caminos santiagueños” con nuevas composiciones y grabado junto a los músicos que formaban su banda. Lo presentó en septiembre de 2015 el Teatro Opera continuando los festejos por sus 40 años de trayectoria. En la actualidad se está presentando con una formación de trío llamado Riendas Libres junto a Homero Carabajal y Martina Ulrich, dos notables músicos de su propio “riñón”. Su repertorio incluye nuevas canciones y los grandes éxitos de Peteco. PETECO CARABAJAL Peteco Carabajal is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, his main instruments being guitar and violin. He is a pioneer of the new folklore tradition. He has written some of the most often interpreted and well-loved songs of the Argentinean songbook. Many of them have been recorded in many different countries. Songs such as “Como pájaros en el aire”, “Perfume de carnaval”, “La estrella azul”, “Digo la mazamorra”, “Puente Carretero”, “Mi abuela bailó la zamba”, just to name a few. Peteco was born and raised in La Banda, Santiago del Estero, a province in Northern- Argentina where music is a part of everyday life; particularly on Sundays, when it is a tradition to gather to play and dance. This tradition started with Peteco’s father Carlos, and uncle Agustín. His professional debut was with the band Santiago Trío, along with his cousin Roberto Carabajal, and Shalo Leguizamón. With them, Peteco records his first album. In 1975 he joined the legendary musical family group Los Carabajal. In the 80’s he formed M.P.A. (Músicos Populares Argentinos) alongside some of the most well-known and respected musicians in Argentinean folklore: Chango Farías Gómez, Mono Izarrualde, Verónica Condomí and Jacinto Piedra. With Piedra he later formed the project Santiagueños, which included the renowned folk dancer and choreographer Juan Saavedra. This band became the symbol of a new era in Folklore music in Argentina. Mercedes Sosa recorded many of Peteco’s songs, and invited him to join her on a three year tour that included Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States. In 1991, he released Encuentro his first solo album. Afterword he recorded twelve solo albums, and through the years he has received many prestigious awards, such as: Gran Premio SADAIC in 1989, Consagración Cosquín in 1990 with Santiagueños, Premio ACE in 1992 and 1994, Konex de Platino in 1995, Premio Gardel a la Música in 2004 for his album El baile, and Premio Atahualpa al Folklore. In 2011 the City Legislature declared him Distinguished Personality of the Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, and also received an Honorable Mention in The Senate of Argentina. In 2012 his album El Viajero was awarded the Premio Gardel a la Música; (Premios Gardel is the Latin-American equivalent of the Grammy Awards). In 2014 he received an honorable mention, Hombres y Mujeres de Nuestra Tierra by Argentina’s Congress. The Congress also awarded him for his contribution to Argentinian music with the Premio Democracia, by the Centro Cultural Caras y Caretas. Recently, Peteco has started to dabble in painting, and he is also writing a book about his family and his roots. In 2013 he recorded an album of tango music entitled Peteco de Buenos Aires. He has also produced the film Chacarera, which reflects the culture of Santiago del Estero. In 2015 he released Los caminos santiagueños, an album of his new compositions, recorded live at one of the most important theaters in Argentina, Teatro Opera, in celebration of his forty years in the music business. Currently he is performing with his new project Riendas Libres (Free Reigns), accompanied by his son Homero Carabajal and his step-daughter Martina Ulrich, also renowned musicians, with their own successful careers.
