Written after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, this song is a heartfelt message of support for the people of Japan. ‘Not Alone in the World’ is the first release by singer-songwriter Bénjad, sung in English and Japanese, featuring Hannah King. Recorded at Chetham’s School of Music, the musicians were all students and friends of Bénjad – many of whom have gone on to conservatoires around the UK. The single has a classical, melancholic sound which tries to convey the emotions felt by everyone affected by the disaster. It also features Hannah King on oboe in a duet with the clarinet, with long, melodious, singing lines evoking a feeling of loss. There is a sense of support and hope at the end when the vocalists sing the Japanese lyrics together before a peaceful ending. The single was released on the first anniversary of the tragedy.
