The title of this recording describes it - impromptu - on the spur of the moment. Not even the recording itself was planned. On May 15, 2002 we were on location for a completely different project that was not coming together. Rather than breaking down the equipment to go home, I decided to improvise on some hymns at the piano. So we tried a couple, and then a few more. After listening to them, we decided to return another day to complete a full CD. What you have here is the result of those two evenings. These extemporaneous compositions are not arranged and do not represent multiple takes or edits. As such, they are not perfect, neither do they pose as great art. Were it not for many people who have requested such a recording, particularly at a time when hymns are being forgotten, I would not have considered sharing them. After all, the concept of recording improvisations seems to contradict the very nature of their spontaneity. However, the God of Whom these hymns testify does not change. His mercy, love, and truth are everlasting (Psalm 100). So here, as a pianist, I am reaching back to the hymns of my childhood as well as drawing from the present by including a few of my own contributions to the genre. Reflecting on the truths of Scripture evident in these hymns, I trust these meditative moments will afford you the opportunity to contemplate the grace of God in your own life. -------------- Paul S. Jones served as Organist and Music Director of Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia from 1998-2014. His musical studies began at the age of five in the Toronto Conservatory program. He holds graduate degrees in piano and conducting from Indiana University School of Music where, as a doctoral fellow, he studied with esteemed pianist and pedagogue, Menahem Pressler, and was recipient of an Arts Grant in conducting from The Canada Council. As a pianist, Dr. Jones has collaborated with violinist David Kim, cellist Anne Martindale Williams, duo piano partner Samuel Hsu, and Metropolitan Opera stars Jerome Hines, Sharon Sweet, and Stuart Neill, as well as other artists of renown. He is author of "Singing and Making Music: Issues in Church Music Today" (P&R, 2006), and is a regular church conference speaker and clinician. Dr. Jones is president of Paul Jones Music, Inc., a corporation of composers who write new music for the 21st century church (www.pjonesmusic.us). Jones has composed or arranged more than 200 sacred works including "Hymns for a Modern Reformation" with the late James Montgomery Boice and "Hymns of Prayer" with Eric J. Alexander, of Scotland.
