Chris Cawthray turned "pro" at 15, thanks to his parents driving him and his drums around to play in places that certainly thought he was a helluva lot older. Chris missed the high school prom to play congas with a southern rock cover band. By 17, Chris was studying Carnatic percussion with Trichy Sankaran and served as Sankaran's roadie and "tour hippie" from 1992-1996. From 1992-1999 Chris led, wrote, and frikkin' died every night on stage for his jamband HEARSAY, a quintet ahead of its time, and whose time never came. Various ad hoc original projects continued, and Chris also began composing and performing music for contemporary dance in Toronto, including his selection for the "Composer's Choice" series at the fFida festival in 2002, which also marked his debut as a professional dancer, and ended it. Chris had no qualms about cranking out the hits for money, and worked extensively in commercial/cover bands in and around Toronto from 2002-2010, and may still very well be out there right now counting in Mustang Sally. In 2002, Chris released his first solo album "winter music" (cc1001) on his own label, Coagulated International and has followed it up with a variety of acclaimed but under-purchased releases including most recently "improvised roots". Since 2004 Chris has led his trio, CC3, on the road and in the studio (3 releases to date), the lineup has evolved (and revolved) since its inception and sometimes is actually just a duo, but CC3 is closing in on its 1000th gig. In 2010 Chris assembled an all-Canadian backing band for his hero, Colonel Bruce Hampton, and this unprecedented example of cross-border collaboration continues into 2012 with more tour dates planned. In 2011, Chris has released three new recordings: "MOVE vol.2" (a solo effort), and the new CC3 EP "the known world", both available at all major digital music retailers. In addition, he released "DO!" the self-titled debut of his organ and drums duo as a free download on soundcloud.com Chris' current touring ensembles include his trio, CC3 featuring guitarist Rob Price, and DO!, a duo with organist Simeon Abbott.
