Recorded in Newton Grove, Wilmington, and Leland, North Carolina over the course of six months, The Casserole's self-titled debut album is special. A blend of bluegrass, rock, reggae and jazz, each of the songs on 'The Casserole' tell a story. Steve Todd, mandolin player and lead vocal/songwriter for the band, puts lyrics first in his song-craft (per a review: 'intricate and insightful'); his mandolin work is melodic, blurring the lines between bluegrass, jazz, reggae, and everything in between. 'The Kid' is a classic cowboy tune with Spanish style guitars, a love story, and of course, mortality at it's core. 'In These Shoes' is an upbeat reggae tune that showcases the killer rhythm section (Andy Dortch on bass, TJ Prystal on drums) and amazing saxophone by special guest player Rich Zimmerman. Listen for Rich's solo on the end of 'Another Sunny Day'- the instruments all rise in crescendo and the sax is set loose- as well as some very strong vocals and mandolin. 'Fences' is a laid back acoustic tune that really showcases the ability of the band to groove. 'Guarded Heart' is pure acoustic bluegrass, really highlighting Steve Todd's commitment to the mandolin. The song stays fast and tight. 'Beaufort Nights' tells the story of Steve and his future wife's (mis)adventures over the course of a weekend in the coastal town of Beaufort, North Carolina. 'Dream Come True' and 'Dick's Farm' showcase more of the laid back acoustic grooves that the band is so capable of. There are hints of Allman Brothers' influence on the band in these tunes. 'What Will Tomorrow Bring' is part blues/rock, part jazz, all Americana. Andy and TJ get to step out, playing solos that serve their reputation (as one Wilmington reviewer has dubbed them) as 'one of the hottest rhythm sections in the area.' 'Walls of Jericho' closes out the album with a Floyd-esque long jam, haunting mandolin, layered guitar work from Dan Sweeney, and a jammy spaciness.
