简介

A serene chaos weaves its way through Amy vanKeeken’s distinct musical ethos. Her fondness for total guitar distortion, eerie organs, and psychedelic tube-amp tones characterize her sound, which is at once dreamy and confidently grounded in clear vocals and introspective songwriting. Though her subject matter is often dark, she navigates grief and pain with a master’s grace; listening to the world is as much a part of her craft as is speaking her truth. Even her most heart-wrenching compositions, such as the distorted, fingerstyle-guitar ballad “Living Without” (from her debut ep, So Long), convey a sublime awareness of endings being the path to new beginnings. van Keeken’s pantheon of influence is broad, ranging from her spiritual guitar guide, Neil Young, to her vocal sisters Vashti Bunyan and Franscoise Hardy, to the charming playfulness of Sergio Mendes. But most endemic to her artistry is her ability to capture a moment in time and bring you inside – her songs are simultaneously visceral and ethereal and as comfortable with chaos as they are silence. With her recent sophomore release, Live Right, vanKeeken radiates rebirth with a confident, sometimes playful approach. “Why Do We Fight” evokes Roger Miller at his best, with a conversational horn and a meandering tambourine echoing the maddening frustration and resignation of an all night, whisky-tinged, lover’s quarrel. The title track is like a sophisticated (but not snobby) AM radio-hit, with all the necessary hooks and hand-claps for a perfect summer bike-riding theme song. Edmonton is not known for it’s beauty, and yet its people see it is as a sonic home to some of the most profound and true music you can find anywhere on the planet - Amy vanKeeken sits right in the heart of it all.
