The Whispering to the Wind album is a collaboration of studio musicians playing to ten songs that I wrote between 1995 and 2005. The collection of songs are genre-confused, but we wanted it that way. I approached the Producer, Jonathan Mayer, back in 2004 with the concept of doing an album with different musical themes for each song. Bye and bye I sent Jonathan 12 songs. Jon and Upton Ethelbah went into the studio to lay down the rhythm tracks at Take Root Recording Studio in San Francisco after we settled on 10 songs and their structure. Jon played drums and percussion and Uppie played bass, acoustic and electric guitar. Jon also textured the songs with music, playing harmonica, keyboards, bass, guitar and furniture-smashing percussion samples on "Little by Little". I came in next to record my guitar parts and the lead vocals. Craig Bicknell then performed the support vocals, stepped forward to play bass on "Rearview Mirror" and sang a lead-vocal "cameo" part on the song "Here and Now". Peter McConnell came on board to play instrumental leads on electric violin, violin, fiddle and heartland banjo. He was featured in most of the instrumental leads on the album, sharing that spotlight with Jon and Uppie on several songs. Chuck Doud played a nylon string guitar part on "Who are We" when we needed a pinch hitter. So now "Whispering to the Wind" is out and finding it's way in the world. The ten songs on "Whispering to the Wind" are diverse, but mostly fit under the sprawling roof of the Americana Eclectic genre, rooted in folk, and ranging from Cowboy and Alt. Country and Rock to Reggae. Optimists might describe the record as novel, a little something for everyone; cynics may find them mis-matched, mish-mashed. I hope everyone will understand that I had to work hard to be weird like that, and will forgive me if I am perceived to be singing the songs theatrically. I have always been a contrarian, and stubbornly hold to the notion that music can be published and marketed like books, if the album is a "good read". So far that notion has remained ridiculous, but you never know. A good read stays in the library, so we are grateful for you to keep our songs in your collection. Thanks for sharing our songs. Enjoy!
