简介
Campbell has a new CD, aptly titled "Something Different." It certainly is that. Although many listeners will be reminded of someone like Bob Dylan, it soon becomes very clear that Campbell is no dylan knockoff. Campbell says, "It used to put me off, when someone said I sounded like dylan. I know I don't, but that's their way of paying me a compliment. It don't happen as much now, and when it does, I just take it like they ment it, and go on. I never copied anyone after I started writing songs. I didn't need to." The songs Campbell writes appeal to a wide audience, but if your preference is bubblegum, or lightweight background noise, perhaps his work isn't for you. His songs are more like short movies. They need to be listened to , to be seen. "In Nashville, music business people said I was great, but they didn't have the artists to do my kind of stuff. Why didn't I do it myself?" So I finally listened to them. This record came out about like I wanted it to. The music is real, and the songs are real. Most of them were recorded in one take, live in studio. People tell me things like; "its great. I listen to it over and over, and don't get tired of it." When you think about it, that's about as good a compliment as you can get. Some quotes from the back of the case are; He's like a cross between Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard..... Kathie Smith You're a storyteller. You're the Delta Dylan. I'm gonna make you rich and famous, sir. Get him a jacket Clarence.... Tom T. Hall You're too good. You write to knock out other songwriters. You have to write for the night manager at the exxon. People are dumb. They ain't gonna get it. John Denny,...pres. Cedarwood publishing No,..no. You take my lighter. I've got a lot more of 'em. Didn't hear the sound, Huh? Hunter Thompson You alright , man?......Bob Dylan You boys oughta listen to him......Uncle Josh Graves - You the best I ever seen. I wish you'd finish this one me and lefty started.......Joe Avants Comments: " well, I don't think people are dumb. They might not have much to listen to. I think songs should be about something. Theres more to write about than love. A good song should convey a feeling to the listener, and if it dosen't do that, I don't care to hear it. I don't mind being compared to people like Merle and dylan and Townes Van Zant. I'd bet most writers would give anything to be. But what I like is when some hardcore rocknroller comes up to me and says.."man...I never liked thqt kind of stuff before, but you just made a believer out of me. " Or when a ten year old kid says to me,,"man you're great. I never heard anything like that before. I love it." Or when a real old person tells me that I've written the best songs they ever heard. And when a young black man tells me the same thing. Such as this is what its all about. Its what music is ment to do. Its not all about the money. That idea is the very reason music and songwriting have gone mostly to hell. So when you listen to Something Different, by Sidney Campbell, and you think you've found something worthwhile, tell your friends.
