Secret Agent Orange, a band that originated while Chicago and The Doobie Brothers were travelling on tour together in the summer of 2008, features Keith Howland (Chicago) on guitar, John Cowan (New Grass Revival, Doobie Bros) on bass and vocals , and Ed Toth (Vertical Horizon, Doobie Bros) on drums. After hitting it off personally and musically while touring together it was discovered that all 3 musicians lived in Nashville, TN. Discussions were had about putting a band together around the amazing vocal talents of John Cowan and Secret Agent Orange was born. Originally just a fun cover band (which you can see on YouTube) where band members could stretch out and play different styles of music, SAO regrouped in 2013 with Cowan taking over bass duties, and started focusing on writing all original material. "Kristofferson" is the third single from SAO and began as a spontaneous jam by the 3 members. Listening back to the almost 8 minute piece, the band "arranged" the first 3 minutes or so of music and left the rest as is, "warts and all", from the Guitar solo all the way to the end. Next, John Cowan brought a Kris Kristofferson lyric (used w/permission) from a song called "Pilgrim's Progress" and added that (with a new original melody) to the mix. Finally, we called in a friendly favor from keyboard great Bill Payne of the legendary band "Little Feat" and the track was complete. Bill was asked to basically play to the track as though he was there from the original session, reacting and improvising as he went along. Boy did he ever nail it! SAO is an amalgamation of all of the influences of the 3 band members inclucing Rock, Pop, Jazz, Prog, R&B and plenty of improvisation thrown in!
