简介
by Jason LymangroverThe Caliphs Tea Party is a remix album of Gonjasufi's breakout debut, A Sufi and a Killer. Featuring Mark Pritchard, Bibio, Broadcast & the Focus Group, Bear in Heaven, and Shlohmo, among others, the list of contributors is impressive. Their aesthetic fits in with the left-field hip-hop styled by former producers (Mainframe, the Gaslamp Killer, and Flying Lotus) as they chop the dreadlocked L.A. yoga instructor/froggy vocalist's a cappella parts to the point that they're left even more detached and disoriented -- which is saying a lot, considering the state of the originals. Because Gonjasufi wasn't involved in the creative process this time around, the source materials all-encompassing sense of intimacy disappears, resulting in a hit-or-miss affair. Even though The Caliphs Tea Party doesn't match up, it does manage take Gonjasufi's visions to unique new places. The beats are innovative, skittering head-nodders that rarely stick to the 4/4 formula, and its interesting to see just how whacked out these remix artists can be with proper motivation. Its just that A Sufi and a Killer wasnt exactly easy to begin with, so making it more psychedelic is an odd way to go.
