KUmZ, a Hawaiian slang for Kumu or Hula teacher, is made up of two Kumu Hula, Karl Veto Baker and Michael Lanakila Casupang who have a hula school celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018 with this recording project entitled HE OLA. Their Hula school is called Halau I Ka Wekiu and has garnered many top and overall awards at the most prestigious Hula competition in the world, the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival held annually in Hilo. This collection of mele, HE OLA, (Life) aims to express that there is life in everything and life is ongoing, flowing and ever-changing . . . he ola. From our life experiences with our students of Halau I Ka Wekiu, the perpetuation of Hula, and with the birht of precious grandchildren . . . he ola . . . there is life. In the passing of loved ones that become our guardian angels, we celebrate their life . . he ola. there is life. These songs express all that we experience in life, with the hope that you can find joy in the songs of life filled with blessing and love . . . HE OLA.
