"...for those who actually want to hear Besskepp’s voice, there’s his new CD The Hey Moment It explores the idea that “Hip hop and poetry met a long time ago, it’s time they tied the knot.” They are impossible to separate here, as rap and spoken word are sometimes front and center, sometimes accompaniment, while singers, beatboxers, guitarists, and keyboardists step into the spotlight created by rugged beats. The Hey Moment is deliberately nostalgic for the Golden Age of Hip Hop, creating a rest area for reflection for heads thirty and up (“We got hip hop oldies stations!” Besskepp exclaims with pride and amazement). Combine that with his desire to be looked up to by kids because he’s a college graduate and it might seem that The Hey Moment is that all too familiar story where blacks who’ve made it distance themselves from those who haven’t. But Besskepp seeks to obliterate that distance (“I’m gonna cop bash so the poor folks can feel me”). Among the highlights here are “Since You’ve Been Gone”—a painfully sensitive ode to a woman in prison—and the title track, which ends with a shout from a drowning man in Katrina’s grip. That sound, a simple “Hey!”, drags us back to 2005 to face the horror while its sheer sonic power rides all that came before it to thrust us toward the future."—L.B.
