If there's one figure who represents grime music's constant ability to surprise and subvert expectations, it's Southeast London's Darq E Freaker. From producing the beat for Tempa T's 'Next Hype' - one of the only true-school grime tunes to cross over to the mainstream in recent years - he's gone on to make a series of monstrous instrumentals including 'Cherryade' and 'Blueberry', the latter picked up by US rap fiend Danny Brown for the stunning 'Pills & Coc*ine' rework. He's also shown huge subtlety and versatility in his dubwise reworking of 'Hard Times' with fellow mavericks Afrikan Boy and Jeb Loy Nichols. These four uncompromising but joyously loopy instrumentals can only serve to cement his position as one of the most important characters in UK music today.
