Maureen (McDonough) Carr was born and raised in the wilds of New Jersey. One of seven children, she often took refuge in her room, and with the help of one of her sisters, learned to play guitar. Her musical debut came about as the result of the same sister inviting her to play at her church's "Folk Mass" one Sunday. Maureen enjoyed it immensely and signed on as a regular. Soon, it became her mission to sneak current popular music into the folk mass repertoire, with songs like "Teach Your Children" on Father's Day or "Let it Be" on Mother's Day. Growing up in the 70's provided more than enough inspiration to fit any sermon, with favorite artists like Loudon Wainwright III, Carole King, Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, and Paul Simon. The congregation, especially the older members, must have wondered what became of the traditional hymns and hymnals! While attending East Stroudsburg State College, she met her future bass player and husband, Ben Carr. The relationship moved rather quickly, from singing harmonies and playing guitar in dorm stairwells to dating and marrying. The personal connection enhanced the music and they began performing as a duo. After moving to the Reading, Pennsylvania area, Maureen & Ben also played with the bands "SideCar" and "Present Company", performing contemporary country, folk, and folk-rock covers, as well as Maureen's originals. In 2002, when she started holding music workshops for preschoolers, Maureen realized how much she had to share with "younger" audiences. With Ben's encouragement, she wrote and recorded 15 songs for her children's CD, "Alukaleigh Lutz & Other Songs for Kids", recommended by Parents' Choice in 2003. Now, in addition to playing clubs and festivals, Maureen began performing at preschools and birthday parties, proving you can have your cake and eat it, too. Maureen next put her energies into recording one for the grown-ups. Her new contemporary country and folk CD "Stones Unturned" is now available. Along with Maureen, the fourteen original songs showcase the talents of Rod DeGeorge, Travis Wetzel, Omer Godinet, Ben Carr, and daughter Meghan Carr.
