Eric Fraser is based in Brooklyn, New York (and Kolkata, India, where he learns from his guru, Pandit Gopal Roy). Eric is an acclaimed exponent of a unique vocal style of North-Indian flute playing. Known for it’s purity and antiquity, this unique "gayaki" or "vocal" style is seldom played today. Eric is a 2011 Fulbright senior scholar for Indian music, and has been learning intensively in the guru/sishya parampara tradition under the training of his guru Pt. Gopal Roy since 2003. With playing that rings with authenticity, subtlety, and lilting tone, Eric takes listeners on a journey to a timeless musical world. "In January 2003, I began to learn the art of Indian bansuri flute playing from Pandit Gopal Roy, and after 6 months I knew that I would dedicate myself heart and soul to learning his rare "gayaki" or vocal style of bansuri playing. I have been back to study with him every year since. Two things have shaped my sadhana (practice): ragas have the power to intoxicate and transform us, and we can access that power by practicing and listening to ragas at their intended time of day.
