The Dentists专辑介绍:by Ned RaggettHaving finally made an American bow with Dressed, the Dentists turned on their considerable charm and appeal even further with Fiasco, which is anything but. Ten tracks of sometimes winsome, sometimes brash guitar pop/rock entertainment, it builds on the strengths of Dressed excellently, with fine self-production throughout. Drummer Rob Grigg fits in the band's aesthetic just right, providing the energy and drive needed for such material without being overbearing, while the remaining three continue doing just what they do best -- and very well at that. Starting with the quick romp of "Pocket of Silver," Michael Murphy's great voice still sweet and touching, the band is clearly out to make a splash, and does so in spades. Murphy is excellent throughout, whether pondering the ways of love and desire or adding just enough spite and bite to his voice at the appropriate times, while he and Collins seem to have gotten even better on guitar than before, from acoustic strumalongs to nuclear-strength yet sparkling riffs. Standout moments are throughout -- one could argue that the whole album consists of nothing but them -- but to pick a few: "Box of Sun" is a fantastic combination of Murphy's overdubbed harmony vocals, brisk but never overbearing thrash with a generally (but of course) sunny, fine feeling. "Leave Me Alive" is one of the band's best, practically anthemic in the foursome's own way, with a musically inspiring verse leading into an even better final chorus, multiple vocals and all. A live, mostly acoustic rendition of "I Can See Your House From Here" is a fine, unexpected diversion -- the recording's a bit rough, but the spirit is all there. Top it off with the amusing "Snapdragon," concluding with some truly goofy vocals from Murphy, and all is again well.
