Hatibonico is my take on the song Latibonit from the Haitian folkloric repertoire. I don’t know for most people but from time to time, as I go through events or phases in my life a music gets into my head and doesn’t go away as things unfold; something that would be akin to the soundtrack to a movie. Well, it just so happens that for me, Latibonit was the soundtrack to one of the most tragic episodes in recent Haitian history; of course I am talking about the terrible earthquake of January 12 2010. I don’t know why exactly, maybe it is the fact that the song is about the sudden unexpected loss of a loved one, missed opportunities, un-mended relationships, on January 12th, and in the days and weeks that followed, this story was repeating itself on an unimaginable scale, the song kept playing over and over in my head as I had to deal with a wide range of emotions: my own feelings of anguish, anxiety, loss, vulnerability, powerlessness etc. It is out of that emotional chaos that Hatibonico came to be.
