With a sound reminiscent of a bygone era, “Sea Leave,” the debut album by Bex Gaunt, invites listeners back in time. A piece of a larger project, the songs of “Sea Leave” found their life in interviews that Bex held with older adults. Sometimes that life was a single word or statement, other times it was an overarching sentiment. Big or small, that inspiration weaved its way into the seven tracks on the album. These songs seek to honor and respect the stories and lives of those who came before us, by keeping their memories alive in our hearts. Calling back to the songs of Billie Holiday and Loretta Lynn, and just as stylistically diverse, “Sea Leave” is at once soulful and playful, familiar and unique. It’s music from the past for the present.
