The album follows the chronological order of appearance of the musical cues in the film, and provides a fascinating window into the world of drug lords and gangsters on the border of the USA and Mexico. The music draws the listener into a dark and violent world that has few points of light, such as the lovely kidnaped girl Marina, whose thematic music features light delicate accordion melodies, Cherango arpeggios and overtones harmonics of the strings orchestra. The music does not fall into any familiar film music genre or cliches, but rather presents a fresh approach to dark suspenseful film music,complimenting perfectly the bright upbeat Mexican folk songs (Narco Corridos) woven into the dramatic score.
