简介
Amberseed is an ambient music project founded by Shaun De Feo in London. As its main composer, producer and performer, De Feo is the only member of Amberseed. De Feo started a successful career in 1991 as an in-house sound engineer and programmer for the Virgin/EMI Group of Studios and continued later as a freelancer. He has worked with some of the most influential record producers, DJs and artists from the last three decades. In January 2014, Amberseed independently released their debut album ‘The Ambient Sessions - A Medium Slower Than Air’, which include collaborations with poet and musician Hector Thomas on ‘The Dreaming’ and late friend and musician Tony Fanthorpe on ‘The Stars War Project’. The album falls under the ambient and experimental genre, using electronic instruments and processing techniques to create dark and atmospheric soundscapes, drones, natural and industrial sublimes and haunting chords. The album was recorded using traditional analogue tape and mixed at prestigious recording studios in London, adding textures of warmth and richness to its distinctive sound. "Its Full of Stars” The initial concept for It's Full of Stars came to light while I was watching the sequel to the '2001 - A Space Oddessy’, 2010 - The Year We Made Contact. The track is named after a phrase from David Bowman's last transmission to mission control. Although the famous phrase 'Oh my god - it's full of stars' grabbed my attention, it was the way David said it and the way it sounded that made it more interesting. It had a heavy processed sound to it which added a unique quality and made it almost iconic. It was this tone that triggered me to imagine (which I can only describe as) a hollow type soundscape. The full version of It's Full of Stars originally thirty minutes in length has been edited into two parts especially for this album. "Mercy/For Wim Wenders” I always loved the Fairlight Series III. It was slick in design, technically advanced but it's most important element was, it had a very distinctive rich and warm sound. My first experience with Fairlight Series III was at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin and I became a fan instantly. I later became an in-house engineer for an Italian record producer who had a Fairlight Series III in residence at his London studio. Although Fairlight Series III is used on other tracks on the album, Mercy was written and recorded entirely on Fairlight Series III. It was only years later during a pre-mastering session that Mercy would be crossfaded to the track For Wim Wenders. Although the latter track was mixed at various times and a stripped down version mixed especially for this album, it was always lacking an intro. Mercy seemed to fit in perfectly. “Communication" Inspired by the Godfrey Reggio film 'Koyaanisqatsi', Communication was originally called 'Cities' and over one hour in length. The original idea was to use the soundtrack as part of a video installation. I imagined the soundtrack to be accompanied by a video, shot at birds eye view, hovering above and around buildings and skyscrapers in Toyko at night. The video would then be played back in slow motion with its main colouring altered to various shades of blue on twelve screens shown in a pure white room. The name was changed from Cities to Communication after my late friend Tony Fanthorpe listened to the hour long version and announced, 'this music should be beamed out and used as a communication tool for contacting alien lifeform'. "The Dreaming" I had just finished laying down the basic backing track for The Dreaming at Townhouse III Studios, London. Hector Thomas was in the same building and he wandered into the control room. He sat down by the mixing console, listened to the track then said "I have just finished writing a poem and it would be perfect for this track". He was so excited, as was I, we decided to record the poem over the backing track straight away. I remember there was a AKG C12 value microphone already setup in the live studio area. A few minutes later Hector was reciting the poem to tape. We both agreed the first vocal take was really special and the one used in the final mix. "The Star Wars Project" The Star Wars Project is the most spontaneous track on the album and the first ambient track Amberseed recorded in a professional recording studio. It was recorded and mixed during a one night studio session in Litton Lane studios, Dublin with Peter Williams and Chris O’Brien. All tracks produced, recorded and mixed by Shaun De Feo except for 'The Stars Wars Project' produced by Tony Fanthorpe & Shaun De Feo, recorded and mixed by Peter Williams & Chris O'Brien. All tracks written by Shaun De Feo except for 'The Dreaming' lyrics by Hector Thomas and music by Shaun De Feo. 'The Stars Wars Project' lyrics and music by Tony Fanthorpe & Shaun De Feo. Recorded and mixed in London, Oxford and Dublin. Tracks 2, 4, 5 & 7 mastered at Townhouse Mastering by Frank Arkwright and tracks 1, 3, 6, 8. & 9 by Shaun De Feo. Artwork and sleeve design by Raoul de Charmoy.
