简介

Our long-standing blog states only that We're Late For Class is a "live, all improv, college outfit with over a dozen rotating members... pro-herb, anti-contract and avid cut & pasters." And that was pretty much all anyone ever knew about the band who bills their music as "Live Improvisation For Your Smoking Jacketed Pleasure." The site's immense catalog includes 72 numbered releases (+ others); full length albums, extended EPs, (up-to) 40-minute single song improvisational excursions, an experimental Beatles Mash-Up, curious sidetracks, tongue-in-cheek historical revisionism (#6 "'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' As Played By Vanilla Fudge Imitating Iron Butterfly When Fudge Were Forced To Open For Butterfly At The Fillmore West After In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Went Top Ten") and - as of last year - a much-discussed LP, "Gout." 2016 was the year We're Late For Class outed themselves as the perpetrators of what became known the Great Web Mystery of the new millennium... Art Jackson's Atrocity. A "radical, experimental jazz/rock outfit" that first surfaced on MySpace in 2006, with an "unreleased promo album from 1974" ("Gout") and a backstory featuring the likes of Black Panthers, Miles Davis and a heroin-addled, 20-year-old guitarist so "ahead of his time" that CBS Records didn't know how to sell him. But... it was all bullshit. Yet, the story lingered... then festered across the internet, in blogs and on forums, until the original, freely circulating "Gout" MP3s were being bootlegged on European vinyl for over $60 a pop. Then, Art Jackson's Atrocity found its way into the pages of MOJO magazine, where "Ask Fred" columnist/historian Fred Dellar had to admit that he was stumped by the legitimacy of "Gout," though he went on on to state that "whatever the provenance, it's a fine, percussion-fuelled, invigorating free-for-all." Which brings us to this digital-only release from We're Late For Class, who have been posting free improvisation online since 2007. "The Behest Of We're Late For Class" is an 80-minute compilation culled from over 25 hours of WLFC's immense musical catalog. A "loss leader," of sorts, designed to introduce the masses to what a small cadre of irreverent followers, disturbed individuals, and purveyors of cosmic stoner rock n' noise have quietly known about for years. A taste of WLFC's completely improvisational approach to recording. Music created without rehearsals and with no fine-tuning - then never attempted again. Music that wouldn't exist if the tape recorders weren't running to capture the only audio evidence that any of it ever happened in the first place. Something 99.99999% of the planet (we did the math) will never, ever even hear about, much less experience. It's cheap, too! We've also got a "single" releasing worldwide today. One of our few "vocal" experiments... a Delta blues version of Lennon/McCartney's "I Wanna Be Your Man (Mono Master)," which first appeared (in heavily edited form) on the web-only, indie project, "The Beatles Complete On Ukulele." You've been duly warned. And... we've still got the CD release of "Gout (Remastered & Expanded)," by Art Jackson's Atrocity, currently available here at CD Baby, for those who might be curious what made-up underground jazz/rock legends might sound like.
